READ TO THE RESCUES
“A child who reads will be an adult who thinks” - Unknown
Our Read To The Rescues program is a ground breaking literacy initiative program aimed at K-5th grade students. Each session lasts about 30 minutes in length.
The purpose of this program is to allow children an opportunity to practice their literacy skills by reading to our horses awaiting adoption. Reading to the rescues empowers children to find the joy in reading, to improve their comprehension, strengthen their confidence speaking out loud in a non-judgmental atmosphere, helps to develop a stronger vocabulary, increases attention span, and promotes empathy.
These sessions are also good for the rescues as it introduces them to children in a safe and controlled environment, exposes them to multiple people and situations, builds trust in humans, and gives them the attention and love that they deserve.
Readers start by choosing the rescue they would like to read to. We give the child an opportunity to learn the rescue story of the horse they chose to read to, and spend a short time grooming the horse. Our volunteers then get the barn set up for a comfortable environment to read in while the child chooses their book. Children are allowed to their bring their own book(s), or they can select a story from our rescue library. They will spend roughly 20 minutes reading to their chosen rescue.
Depending on the rescues we have at the time there will be anywhere between 2 and 4 spots available for each time slot. If we run short on spots available we will reach out to discuss other options. A small donation is encouraged for each session, but not required. Please continue to check back for additional dates, as we often add more!
NOTE: A parent or guardian will need to be present for the entire session (on the property, but will not be required to be involved). Everyone who is comes to the rescue property will be required to sign a waiver.
